Standards for LEDs
Using LEDs for lighting is still very new, which is why there are as yet only a few standards in the field. Data on LEDs is also difficult to compare and is often vague.
There are no standard measurement methods or standards concerning how different data about LEDs should be presented. Some suppliers do not provide even the most basic lighting data, while others state lifetime and other data in their individual ways.
It has become apparent that some of the standard measurement methods which are normally applied to light sources are not suitable for light sources. This applies, for example, to measuring the colour rendering index (CRI) also known as the Ra (rendering average) index.
The Trust expects international standards to be laid down within the coming years. This will make it easier to compare LEDs and LED bulbs.
Today, LEDs belong to the same category as lasers in terms of safety. In the EU, products must be CE marked and need to conform to the EN 60825-1 standard (Safety of laser products).
