Lifetime costs – what are they?
When you purchase a computer, the cost of running it is reflected in your electricity bill over the period in which have the computer. We call this the computer’s lifetime costs, i.e. the total cost of using it over the computer’s life, which we have set at 4 years.

If you add both the purchase price and lifetime costs together, you can find out what the product really costs. See the lifetime costs displayed in the list of recommended computers.

Lifetime costs depend on:

  • On, sleep and standby. The time the computer spends in each of these different modes.
  • Lifetime. How many years you expect to have the computer.
  • Electricity price. The Trust bases its calculations on a standard price, but you can also input your own figures.

Sample calculations for the replacement of your computer
The calculator provides a precise indication of how much you can save when you replace a computer. Here are 2 sample calculations.

Switch from desktop computer with CRT monitor to energy efficient notebook

  On Sleep Standby Consumption
Current equipment:
Non energy efficient desktop computer 60 watts 6 watts 4 watts 93 kWh/year
Non energy efficient 17″ CRT monitor 90 watts 8 watts 4 watts 125 kWh/year
Total consumption:       218 kWh/year or EUR 348.80 /year
New equipment:
Energy efficient notebook computer 16 watts 0,5 watts 0,5 watts 20 kWh/year
or EUR 32.00/year

Annual savings:
Savings on electricity bill: 198 kWh/year or EUR 316.80 /year
Total saving: 91 %

Savings in lifetime costs:
Costs over five years based on continuing to run the existing equipment: EUR 250.70
Costs over five years based on an energy efficient notebook EUR 23
Total saving EUR 227.70

Switch from high power consumption desktop computer with CRT monitor to energy efficient desktop

  On Sleep Standby Consumption

New equipment:
Energy efficient desktop computer 30 watts 2,5 watts 0,5 watts 35 kWh/year or EUR 56.00 /year

Annual savings:
Savings on electricity bill: 120 kWh/year or EUR 192.00 /year
Total saving 77 %

Savings in lifetime costs:
Costs over five years based on continuing to run the existing equipment: EUR 178.25

Costs over five years based on an energy efficient desktop computer:

EUR 40.25
Total saving: EUR 138
