Energy efficient use of VCRs, DVDs and hard drive recorders
You can save a lot simply by switching off devices after use, and setting them up sensibly.
Key advice: Switch off after use
On many recorders it is difficult to tell whether the unit is off or on because the display often looks much the same. A recorder left on constantly throughout the whole year, instead of only being on when you need it, can add up to 400 kWh (circa EUR 80) to your electricity bill.
Default to standby
Many VCRs and DVDs can be configured to use less power by defaulting to standby after a recording is over. Set the recorder to default to standby after a maximum of 30 minutes.
Set the hard drive recorder so that it only operates when required. The recorder uses more power when the hard disk is running.
Standby is highest on older machines
The standby consumption for older VCRs can be 10-12 watts, which can add around 100 kWh (circa EUR 20) to your electricity bill. You can eliminate this by switching off the device or unplugging it. Generally speaking, new DVDs and hard drive recorders have lower standby consumption (circa 1.5-3 watts), which means you save less by switching off the equipment.
