Now it's the turn of embassies in Denmark to become climate conscious

The French Embassy in Denmark is saving energy. Amongst other steps taken, the Embassy has signed a Curve Breaker Agreement with the Danish Electricity Saving Trust. Now the Embassy, together with the Trust and City of Copenhagen Klima+ (Climate+) network, wants other embassies to become climate conscious too.

The French green experience should be shared with others
The French Embassy in Copenhagen was the first embassy to sign a Curve Breaker Agreement with the Trust. The agreement involves the Embassy saving 15% of the power used in the historic Thottske Palæ on Kongens Nytorv from 2008 to 2012.

Now the Embassy would like to share its experiences on the electricity saving front with other embassies in Copenhagen. The first steps are being taken on 24 September at a meeting to be attended by Mayor Klaus Bondam (City of Copenhagen Technical and Environmental Committee), the French Ambassador, the Trust and Klima+. At the meeting the participants will explain how embassies can tackle energy savings.

"It's very important for us to send a signal that France is engaged  in solving climate problems in support of the efforts leading  up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen" says Bérengère Quincy, the French Ambassador. "Everyone can get involved in doing something about global warming. There are savings opportunities – even in a historic building like ours. Now we want to share our experiences with other embassies" she adds.

Good that the French Embassy has taken the initiative
Christian Jarby, Manager for Public Sector Affairs at the Trust is full of praise for the initiative:

"It's great that the French Ambassador is so engaged in the debate about  the climate, and is personally taking the initiative to create a network of climate-aware ambassadors in Copenhagen. The Trust is more than happy to place its expertise and tools at the disposal of foreign embassies. These can help them to conclude Curve Breaker Agreements, " he says.

Klima+ network can inspire and contribute energy advice
The City of Copenhagen's Klima+ network is offering embassies the chance to join a network of organisations who are interested in minimizing their impact on the climate.

"Klima+ can help by offering an active and inspiring network forum, tailor-made energy advice, and profiling" says Jacob Hartmann, project coordinator at Klima+. "The French Embassy's example is extremely inspiring. It clearly shows that the target for reducing CO2 emissions is realistic. A partnership with the Trust and Klima+ is a major step in the right direction for embassies in the lead up to COP15."

The meeting at the French Embassy on 24 September, which is by invitation only, is for foreign embassies and other international organisations in Copenhagen.
