Consumers can now monitor how much electricity they use in their homes

‘My Home’ is a completely new software tool developed by the Danish Electricity Saving Trust which provides consumers with a complete picture of how much electricity they use in their homes. The tool allows households to monitor the amount of power consumed by electrical appliances and discover how much they can save.

Essential to have an intelligent home
By introducing this tool the Trust has laid the foundations for the intelligent home, in which wireless equipment switches off the lights, and even the iron, when someone forgets to do so.

Most consumers use much more power than necessary. This is because they forget to switch off equipment when they move from one room to another, or when they stop using an appliance.

Because this pattern of behaviour is extremely difficult to change, and in order to achieve greater savings, consumers need help to manage their power consumption on a more intelligent basis. ‘My Home’ can trim their electricity consumption by 30% – without reducing the levels of comfort.

Electricity savings calculator
The ‘My Home’ site lets consumers draw their house, and install their electrical appliances. The program then automatically calculates how much can be saved. Users can also upload their own floor plan and store it for future reference.

Consumers can also compare their own consumption patterns with one of five typical examples featured on the site. They can also insert pictures of their home and data from public authorities, including a wealth of information provided by the Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority’s national property database (‘BBR-meddelelse’).

Personalised electricity monitoring centre
By using simple wireless equipment householders will also be able to send data online to ‘My Home’, which acts as a personalised monitoring centre. In this way consumers have a total picture of their overall consumption and the power used by individual appliances.

The system can also send automatic e-mails if consumption levels rise unduly, or if appliances should be replaced with new and more energy efficient versions.

Installation of remote metering by the electricity supply companies in the near future also means that consumers with be able to track their power consumption on a daily, monthly and annual basis.

In the long term, ‘My Home’ may also be able to provide comprehensive monitoring of the home with features such as burglar alarms, excessively high or low temperature warnings, moisture meters and much more.

Consumers can also subscribe to a news update service which automatically sends an e-mail when new functions become available on the site.

The Trust has adopted the slogan ‘My Home is YOUR Home’. This sends a clear signal to consumers that it is up to them to decide which information they would like to share, and whom they authorise to view the data.

‘My Home’ is developed and financed by the Danish Electricity Saving Trust. The website has been launched in partnership with the Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority and will feature on the latest version of www.borger.dk.
