Almost 3% of the electricity used in homes is consumed by devices with external chargers

Devices with power supplies include all the devices we use at home which are not kitchen appliances and which do not have a charger; devices like, for example, electric beds, exercise bicycles and clock radios.

Switch off devices when you are not using them
The best advice is to switch off devices with external power supplies when you have finished using them if it is not necessary to have them on.

Watch out for standby consumption
If a device with a power supply can only be switched off between the power supply and the device, it can use up to 40 kWh (about EUR 8) per year. So make sure you switch it off at the mains plug.

Meter your consumption with a SparOmeter
Borrow or buy a SparOmeter to keep track of the power used by your appliances. This accurate meter measures the power consumption in both the on and standby modes.
