Optimise your computer with accessories
Connect your external computer peripherals to an AutoPowerOff plug bank, or buy accessories with USB ports.
Buy products powered by the USB port
Hard disks, loudspeakers, removable drives and other products all come in versions that take their power via a USB port. Choose them if in all other respects they comply with your requirements in terms of functionality.
They use less than 2.5 watts because that is the maximum power that a USB port can supply. Also, the devices are switched off at the same time as the computer.
Please note, however, that some computers do not shut down the USB ports when the computer is switched off, so you should check this when making your purchase.
Larger hard disks
3.5″ hard disks cannot take their power from a USB port, because the port’s output is not high enough. These should be connected to an AutoPowerOff plug bank instead.
External CD and DVD drives
Newer computers have built-in CD drives, and many also have a built-in DVD drive. But if your computer does not have a built-in drive, then buy a USB powered external version.
Energy efficient use
- Switch off equipment after use
Switch off your computer accessories when you are not using them.
- Connect an AutoPowerOff plug bank
If you have accessories such as a large hard disk or loudspeakers, you should connect them to an AutoPowerOff plug bank connected to your computer. They will be switched off the moment you switch off your computer.
