Facts
Natural gas is more environmentally friendly than electric heating. 1 household switching from electric to natural gas heating discharges 5 tons less CO2 into the environment.
Reduce your carbon footprint by 67%
If you use 15,000 kWh of electricity per year to heat your house, your carbon footprint will be around 7,500 kg of CO2. By switching to natural gas you will reduce this amount by 67% to about 2,475 kg.
The Trust has calculated that you will generally increase your heat consumption by 15% when you switch. Experience shows that we tend to use more heat when we know that it costs and pollutes less.
Half the cost of electric heating
You pay for natural gas per m3, and this typically costs less than half the price of a unit of electric heat. For most people, the annual savings in heating bills will be enough to cover the annual payments on a 10-year loan taken out to meet the installation costs.
The natural gas market in Denmark is deregulated, which means that consumers have a choice of suppliers. If you want to switch to natural gas you need to ask your supplier to connect a supply pipe to the house. You will also need to arrange for the installation of a gas boiler and radiators.
Natural gas has other uses apart from heating
Aside from heating the house, once installed, natural gas can be used as fuel for all sorts of other appliances and products such as:
- Gas cookers
- Gas powered tumble dryers (half the drying time)
- Gas barbecues
- Gas flamers
- Gas-heated saunas
Facts about natural gas
- Natural gas is the cleanest of all the fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), and the fact that more and more consumers are switching to natural gas is very positive for the environment.
- Natural gas is invisible, odourless and non-toxic.
- The smell we associate with natural gas is an odorant that has been added so that you can detect any gas leaks.
- Natural gas comes from the decomposition of animal and vegetable matter which has been compressed over millions of years by the pressure of the earth’s surface above.
- Natural gas primarily consists of methane.
- Natural gas is lighter than air and escapes into the atmosphere when leaks occur.
