Good advice on ovens

Read the 5 good tips below, and learn to use your oven energy efficiently.

  1. Fill up the oven – roast and bake at the same time
Everything that requires the same temperature can be cooked at the same time. For example, you can save circa 60% of the energy consumption by cooking meat or fish at the same time as potatoes and desert cake. In a fan-assisted oven you can use several shelves at the same time.
  2. Use warming up and cooling down heat
Make use of the heat as the oven is warming up by putting all your prepared dishes and any baking into the cold oven. Then set the temperature. Turn off the oven at the end of the cooking time described in the recipe. Let the food stand in the oven for a further 5-10 minutes; this saves 10-25% of the electricity.
  3. Defrost first
It takes longer and uses circa 30% more energy to cook a frozen joint of meat than you would otherwise use if it was defrosted. Defrost in the fridge in good time. You’ll save energy and the meat will be better.
  4. Mini ovens
Advice on how to use ordinary ovens also applies to mini ovens. Compared with larger ovens, mini ovens save energy, but this is only the case for shorter cooking times under 45 minutes.
  5. Microwave ovens
A microwave oven is more efficient than an ordinary oven because it shortens cooking times considerably. Use a microwave if the food lends itself to this type of cooking.
