Good advice on microwave ovens
Read the 4 good tips below, and learn to use your microwave oven energy efficiently.
Unfortunately, there is no energy labelling scheme for microwave ovens, but the 4 tips will help you to use your microwave in the most energy efficient way.
- Small portions
You can save energy by cooking portions in the microwave oven instead of using the hob. You can save up to 75% of the energy by cooking food in a microwave oven instead of an ordinary oven. - Less water
Only use a little water when cooking in a microwave. The less water, the less energy consumption. You can often dispense with water completely. - Portion food evenly
Energy consumption will be lower when you portion food evenly, and when you use as large a dish as possible. The thinner the portions, the quicker time required to cook the food. Round or oval flat-bottomed dishes are best. - Keep the lid on
Cover the food with a plastic lid, microwave film, a plate or other suitable material. This retains the heat, saves energy and makes cleaning easier.
