Good advice on microwave ovens

Read the 4 good tips below, and learn to use your microwave oven energy efficiently.

Unfortunately, there is no energy labelling scheme for microwave ovens, but the 4 tips will help you to use your microwave in the most energy efficient way.

  1. Small portions
You can save energy by cooking portions in the microwave oven instead of using the hob. You can save up to 75% of the energy by cooking food in a microwave oven instead of an ordinary oven.
  2. Less water
Only use a little water when cooking in a microwave. The less water, the less energy consumption. You can often dispense with water completely.
  3. Portion food evenly
Energy consumption will be lower when you portion food evenly, and when you use as large a dish as possible. The thinner the portions, the quicker time required to cook the food. Round or oval flat-bottomed dishes are best.
  4. Keep the lid on
Cover the food with a plastic lid, microwave film, a plate or other suitable material. This retains the heat, saves energy and makes cleaning easier.
